The Sailor Scouts are a number of super heroine who protect the earth from the dark forces. Each of the Sailor Scouts are named after the different planets and each are associated with a particular element. The Sailor Scouts are divided into two main groups, the Inner Sailor Scouts and the Outer Sailor Scouts. Each of the Sailor scouts were princess of their own home planet and served the Moon Princess Princess Serenity.

Hotaru Tomoe is a young girl who becomes the powerful Sailor Saturn, the Senshi of Ruin and Rebirth. In Japanese mythology, the firefly are thought to be the souls of soldiers who have died in war. When she was first encountered, she was possessed by Mistress 9. She is later adopted by Sailor Neptune, Sailor Uranus, and Sailor Pluto. Her best friend is Rini and her name means 'Firefly Sprouting from the Earth'.
