The Death Note is a Shinigami's notebook and is imbued with the power to kill any human whose name is written in it. All Death Notes all follow the same set of very specific rules. Although Shinigami are not required to share the rules with humans, some let them "slip" for entertainment purposes in what they consider to be an otherwise interminably boring eternity.
